![]() You can get Windows Terminal from the Microsoft Store here. This is a fairly recent Windows 10 build. Installing is easy but a prerequisite is Windows 10 build 18362 (or higher). Windows Terminal is still in preview, and at the time of writing this, it’s in version 0.3 (Preview). As such, it isn’t tied to PowerShell, although it can host a PowerShell session easily. Windows Terminal aims to be a powerful terminal, regardless of what scripting language you choose to use. But then again, PowerShell is still very much a management and task automation framework with a scripting language. We got PowerShell in late 2006, and that’s a very capable and viable alternative to Command Prompt. ![]() In powershell one command retrieves the objects, and another formats them. The idea with Windows Terminal is to go beyond the traditional Command Prompt, which has been around in Windows (and before that, i n MS-DOS) for decades. In other words, a command does not *both* retrieve the data/objects *and* format them. See, in Powershell the cmdlets do only one thing and they do it well. Which means that *you* control the output. Contrary to bash and other *sh, Powershell separates formatting from the output of the command. Table output: Only some types are formatted as tables. The 'ls' command (alias for get-childitem) accepts an '-Exclude' switch. ![]() Long command line switches: Any switch can be shortened as long as it is unambiguous. Want help with a command? do 'help gcm' or 'gcm -?'. Cannot quite remember the command know that it has something to do with "net"? do 'gcm *net*'. Want to list all available commands? do 'get-command' or (short form alias) 'gcm'. The output is an excel table where all the important fields are usually hidden.ĭiscoverability: Powershell has *eminent* discoverability. The command line switches are long and the arguments are cryptic. ![]()
